Welcome to Behind the Chair, our little space for hair inspiration, salon news and getting to know the person behind Salon in the Square.

Today, I’m sharing a little more about the journey that brought me to Mawnan Smith and what life is like behind the chair.

A New Chapter in Cornwall

In October 2025, I took over Salon in the Square after moving from Yorkshire to Cornwall with my husband and daughter.

Moving to a new part of the country was a big change, but it felt like the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our family. Choosing to live here in Mawnan Smith was especially important to me. I didn’t just want to run a business in the village — I wanted to become part of the community and create a salon that genuinely feels like it belongs here.

Since taking over the salon, I’ve loved getting to know so many of the people who live locally and welcoming both familiar and new faces through the door. It’s been wonderful becoming part of village life and building relationships with clients along the way.

A Lifetime Behind the Chair

Hairdressing has been a huge part of my life for almost two decades. I started hairdressing when I was just 16 years old, and now, at 35, I still feel as passionate about it as I did when I first started.

Over the years, I’ve developed my skills across all areas of hairdressing, but there’s something particularly special about creating a look that makes someone feel fantastic when they leave the salon.

My absolute favourite service to do in the salon is a beautiful blow-dry. There’s something so satisfying about that final finish — smooth, bouncy and polished hair that makes you feel instantly put together.

That said, I’ll always have a soft spot for a fresh set of highlights. I love seeing the transformation that beautifully placed, fresh colour can create.

More Than Just Hair

For me, Salon in the Square is about more than hair. It’s about creating a welcoming space where people can take some time for themselves, have a chat, relax and leave feeling great.

Being based in Mawnan Smith, just minutes from Falmouth, means I’m lucky enough to have a wonderful local community around me. Getting to know clients, hearing their stories and seeing familiar faces return is one of the most rewarding parts of running the salon.

I’m incredibly grateful for how warmly I’ve been welcomed since arriving in Cornwall, and I’m excited to continue growing Salon in the Square and being part of the Mawnan Smith community for many years to come.

Life Outside the Salon

When I’m not behind the chair, I love making the most of everything Cornwall has to offer.

I enjoy cycling, exploring Cornwall and discovering new places with my family. I’m also a big fan of settling down with a good Netflix series — preferably one that I can get completely hooked on!

Most of all, I love spending time with my husband and daughter and making the most of family life here in Cornwall.
